This project involved the conversion of a dark and dreary house into a warm and sunny holiday home. The property has a stunning beach-front location, overlooking the sea to the north and bounded by the East Links park to the south. Having been squeezed into the side garden of the adjacent property, the house has a narrow footprint with no window openings on the long sides. Key aspects of the brief were to increase daylight, enhance views and improve the relationship of the house with its surroundings. This was achieved by incorporating several large roof windows along the east to bring sunlight into the heart of the property, and forming new and enlarged openings to the front and rear elevations. The main living space to the north has a fully glazed wall maximising the sea view and providing access to the windy beach; whereas by contrast the kitchen and bedroom spaces open out onto the sunny, sheltered garden and terrace to the south.
